The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
